Pinpoint: the daily country stats game
Pinpoint names one country and asks you to place it on five sliders, drawn from stats like population, area, life expectancy, beer per person, Big Mac prices, happiness and average height. Each slider runs between the real highest and lowest countries in the world, so you're guessing where it sits between them.
Play today's Pinpoint →How to play
- Read the country, then look at the five stats. Each slider shows the real extremes at its two ends.
- Drag each marker to where you think the country falls.
- When all five are set, press Lock in to see the real values.
Scoring
- Each slider scores up to 100 by how close you land: within about 15% for population, area and tourists, or within a year and a half of life expectancy, earns the full 100.
- A day is out of 500, and 300 is a pass.
- The share grid has one square per slider: green for 80 or more, yellow for 40 or more.
Tips
- Start from what you know for sure, like whether the country is big or small, rich or poor, hot or cold.
- Many stats are spread over a huge range, so even a rough guess near the right end scores well.
- Compare with a country you know well that sits on the same slider.
Questions
- Where do the numbers come from?
- Published public datasets, checked by hand. The About page says more about where Hemiscope's data comes from.
- Can I play more than one?
- Yes: New puzzle gives you a random country to practise with.
- When is the next one?
- A new country every day at midnight where you are.
